The Berachain Foundation team conducted an emergency hard fork to eliminate vulnerabilities related to the Balancer V2 hack. This decision was part of an effort to protect users and restore stability to the project's ecosystem.
Before implementing the update, developers decided to temporarily suspend the network to prevent potential exploitation of the vulnerabilities discovered in BEX, a Berachain-based decentralized exchange. Network validators unanimously supported this measure, agreeing to the pause to address the threats.
Some validators have already updated their clients to the new version, but the network has not yet launched. Berachain representatives explained that before restoring block generation, they must ensure that all key infrastructure partners, including those managing the RPC, have completed the upgrades. This remains the main factor delaying the restart.
In an official statement, the team clarified that the operator of the MEV bot, into whose account the stolen assets were transferred, expressed a willingness to return the funds. He identified himself as a white hat—an "ethical hacker"—and stated that he would sign the asset recovery transactions immediately after the network is restored.
After the blockchain is restored, the Berachain team plans to publish a detailed report on the new security measures implemented in BEX and other key components of the ecosystem. Furthermore, the developers promised to disclose the project's next steps and the possible consequences of the recent incident.
Berachain already has significant market share: in February 2025, the network surpassed Base and Arbitrum in total value locked (TVL), reaching $3.24 billion. At the time of writing, this figure has fallen to $413 million, reflecting temporary difficulties caused by recent events.
Despite the current suspension, project representatives are confident that the updated version of the network will be more secure and resilient to potential attacks. Experts believe the measures taken will help strengthen user trust and ensure the long-term stability of the Berachain ecosystem.
The hard fork was an important step in restoring normal network operation and preventing similar incidents in the future, and the team's transparent approach to resolving the issue demonstrates their commitment to maintaining a high level of security and openness to the community.
